POST-TREATMENT GUIDELINES

AVOID direct sun exposure for 2-3 weeks post-peel. If undergoing more than one peel treatment, avoid sun exposure during your program. Absolutely no tanning beds. (We recommend discontinuing this practice permanently as it will negatively affect the long-term health of your skin and the results of your skincare treatments.)

AVOID any activities that will elevate your body temperature or cause sweating for at least 3 days (exercise, sauna, hot tub, etc.). Rule of Thumb: If your skin is sensitive under a warm shower spray, do not heat your body internally.

DON'T expose your skin to pool water or chlorine-based chemicals until it has completely healed.

NEVER pick, pull, scrape, or scrub flaking or peeling skin during the recovery phase. This could result in adverse effects such as scarring or hyperpigmentation & discoloration of the skin. Allow skin to shed naturally. Trim shedding skin with a pair of small nail scissors if desired. Use the Post-Peel Moisturizer provided in your post-treatment kit to help mitigate any sensitivity or itchiness associated with the peeling process.

AVOID using any active topicals for 10 days minimum post-treatment, or until your skin has returned to normal (up to 14 days). Active topicals include retinol-based, benzoyl-peroxide-based, exfoliating, and AHA/BHA-based products.

DON'T schedule any facial waxing treatments for at least 14 days post-peel.

NEVER allow your skin to dry out and “crack.” Use our provided post-treatment kit to keep your skin moisturized and hydrated while healing.

DO be very careful of hair color services and the use of chemicals around the perimeter of your face while your skin is healing. Do not allow hair color to overlap the treatment area.

DO protect your skin diligently! A mineral SPF 30 has been provided to you in your post-treatment kit. Wear it daily and re-apply as needed.

DO Avoid excess heat. Failure to do so may increase the risk of hyperpigmentation and/or other unwanted outcomes.

DO use your post-treatment skincare kit daily while your skin is healing. These products will soothe and protect your skin during the recovery phase, until you are ready to resume your prescribed skincare regimen.

IF you have very sensitive skin, we recommend that you sleep elevated for the first 1-3 nights to prevent fluids from pooling in the eye area. Mild puffiness can occur for sensitive skin types. If needed, you may take an antihistamine such as Zyrtec or Claritin to reduce any skin puffiness.

POST-TREATMENT SKINCARE REGIMEN

DAY 1: Skin will feel tight and may appear darker/colored.

The day of treatment is "Day 1." The solution should remain on the treated areas for at least 6 hours. During this time, do not wash, touch, rub, apply SPF or makeup to the treated areas.

Post Peel Moisturizer with 1% hydrocortisone is included in the Patient Home Care Kit and may be used after six hours, only if:

  • The skin feels excessively irritated or uncomfortable
  • Patient is a Fitzpatrick 4-6, has melasma or hyperpigmentation
  • A Perfect Derma Clear, Plus, or Plus Plus booster was added to the treatment

The peel self-neutralizes after 6 hours, at which time you may continue to leave the peel on overnight (recommended), or cleanse your skin with water and a gentle cleanser before bed, if desired.

DAY 2 (AM):

  • Gently wash and dry the treated areas
  • Vigorously apply the 1st Post Peel Towelette to the treated areas while in its square, folded shape
  • Continue to apply to towelette and as it dries out, unfold it completely and continue to apply until all solution is used
  • Allow the skin to dry and product to absorb for 30 minutes before applying Mineral Perfection SPF 30
  • Makeup may be worn, if desired

DAY 2 (PM):

  • 30-60 minutes before bedtime, gently wash and dry the treated areas
  • Vigorously apply the 2nd Post Peel Towelette to the treated areas while in its square, folded shape
  • Continue to apply the towelette and as it dries out, unfold it completely and continue to apply until all the solution is used
  • Leave the towelette solution on overnight

If you are experiencing irritation, apply a small amount of Post Peel Moisturizer 2-3 times daily. You may also place a cold compress against the treated area for relief. If there is no significant irritation, do not use any moisturizing products on the treated areas until peeling begins (usually Day 3).

Avoid excess sweating, swimming, sauna, heavy exercise, or sun exposure during the peel process, as these activities may cause irritation, heat blisters, and other adverse effects.

DAY 3-6: Peeling generally begins on Day 3

  • Wash skin with a gentle cleanser and a gentle microfiber cloth
  • Once peeling begins, apply a thin layer of Post Peel Moisturizer to the treated areas to control dryness and relieve tightness & possible itchiness
  • This moisturizer should be used 2-3 times per day

Please use Post Peel Moisturizer as follows:

  • One week for Caucasian patients
  • Two weeks for Asian, Black, Hispanic, and Indian patients
  • If Post Peel Moisturizer runs out, an over the counter 1% hydrocortisone cream may be substituted

Additional Tips:

  • Do not rub, pick, or pull on peeling skin, as this may cause scarring and discoloration of the skin
  • Gently wash and dry the treated areas morning and night
  • Do not use scrubs, masks, or any active products such as retinoids, exfoliators, AHAs/BHAs, or benzoyl peroxide
  • Mineral Perfection SPF 30 should be applied every two hours during sun exposure or throughout the day as needed

DAY 7: The bulk of the peeling process is usually complete, unless a booster was added during treatment.

  • Mild flaking may still be occurring in some treated areas
  • Continue to protect the skin with Mineral Perfection SPF 30
  • Regular skincare regimen may be resumed after 10 days minimum (or longer), once skin has completely healed and returned to normal

POST-PEEL EXPECTATIONS

1 - Similar to a mild to moderate sunburn, warmth, tightness, redness, and sensitivity are common side effects on the day of treatment. These side effects may persist for several days, depending on skin type and the strength of peel used.

2 - Mild edema (puffiness) is more rare, but is also a possible side effect of aggressive peels or for those with very sensitive skin. If needed, an antihistamine such as Zyrtec or Claritin may be taken to help reduce any puffiness or itchiness caused by a histamine reaction. If present, puffiness is typically most noticeable in the under-eye area. For sensitive skin types or more aggressive peels, we recommend sleeping elevated for 1-3 nights to help avoid fluids pooling in the eye area.

3 - Skin may begin to darken as the skin tightens and prepares to shed. This is temporary while pigment and discolorations are being pulled to the surface of the skin, and will resolve during the healing process as pigmented skin is lifted and sloughed off.

4 - Peeling, dryness, and/or flaking are common side effects after receiving clinical peels, and the extent of these depends on the type & strength of peel used and condition of the skin. Actual visible peeling will vary with each patient. Some patients shed layers of skin for several days, while others experience a light flaking process. Many factors can affect the amount of shedding, but as long as the peel is left on for 6 hours or more, and our homecare protocol is followed, results will be achieved. Factors that can influence the amount of peeling include skin type, lifestyle, amount of sun damage, previous treatments received, area peeled, and daily homecare regimen. Other factors may include medications used, where the patient is in her/his cellular cycle, or weather conditions. Even if visible peeling is light or barely visible, cellular exfoliation is occurring and will benefit the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production.

5 - Skin will return to normal within 7-14 days, depending on peel intensity and/or boosters used.

6 - After at least 10 days, once skin has completely healed, you may resume your normal prescribed skincare regimen.

TREATMENT BENEFITS & FREQUENCY

TO ACHIEVE BEST RESULTS: When various skin conditions are present (acne, melasma/pigmentation, aging skin), a series of 3-4 treatments is recommended, spaced 4 weeks apart. Boosters may be added to the peel solution after the first treatment. For maintenance, 1-2 two peels can be done per year, or a series can be completed 1-2 times per year as desired.

TO MAINTAIN RESULTS: When not undergoing an active treatment program, we recommend facial treatments every 4-6 weeks in addition to following a simple, prescribed home maintenance skincare program. Our SPA 360 subscription program is the perfect way to stay on track with your skincare regimen. We will help determine which treatments will be most beneficial to your skin at any given time.
